Compare Dish Network vs Direct TV Programming Packages
For years, DirecTV had the clear lead in the number of channels and number of specific types of programming specialties. That has changed. DISH Network today offers more channels overall, and almost as many specialty sports and movie offerings. When you compare Dish Network vs Direct TV you'll find that Dish Network has more High Definition programing than Direct TV and that no one else can even compare with Dish Network when it comes to HD programming. You'll also find that when you compare Dish Network vs Direct TV that Basic package prices are similar until you start adding more rooms to your package and then you'll find that DirecTV costs start adding up. When you compare Dish Network vs Direct Tv you'll find that if you want a Digital Video Recorder, which everyone does, be prepared because Direct Tv charges extra for a DVR and Dish Network doesn't. |
 |
Equipment
Hardware discounts favor DISH Network, however, DirecTV's purchase packages are today quite competitive with DISH Network's. Wise consumers need to ask, How Much, How (and When) Am I Paying for The Hardware, i.e., is it cash up-front, a "In Home Service Plan" models or "free" model because of poor or no credit? |
 |
Sports
DISH Network offers its highly popular College Game-Day Plan and has several season-long pro sports packages. However, if you have to have every NFL game the choice as with the NFL Sunday Ticket DirecTV has it covered. Otherwise, the sports offerings are similar, focusing on multiregional collegiate sports packages, mostly from Fox. Again, consumers should focus on what they want to watch and what is typically offered by which packages, and for what prices. |
 |
Movies
Both DISH Network and DirecTV offer the same number of premium movie channels, such as Starz Encore, Showtime and HBO. Prices may differ slightly, depending upon the package in favor of DISH Network. DISH Network currently offers a promotion called DISH PAK, where 8 Starz/Encore channels are received at nearly half the regular price. The real difference here is in the number of Pay-Per-View (PPV) movie channels offered, where DISH Network has a slight advantage for the time being, with up to 60 PPV choices/day versus DirecTV's 55 channels.) |
 |
Adult
DISH Network, with 6 total "adult" channels, has the advantage here. DirecTV offers 5 "adult" channels. |
 |
International
DISH Network definitely has cornered the market here, offering today approximately 30 foreign language/culture channels. DirecTV offers 10, most of which focus on the Spanish language audience. |
 |
General Interest
DISH Network's packages are amply described as offering favorable, "general interest" programming and continues to add more on a regular basis. Yet DirecTV also provides just about every channel DISH Network does, albeit sometimes in different packages and for different prices. Consumers need to decide what they can spend, what they want to watch, and which packages offer the best value based upon those criteria. |

Dish Network vs Direct TV Pricing
By our estimates, when you compare Dish Network vs Direct TV, we find that DISH Network today is charging about $45 per subscriber per month for programming delivered to their consumers nationwide. But when you look at DirecTV customers you'll find they are paying roughly a $51 on average per subscriber rate per month. Digital Cable subscribers pay the most for the least in programming at an average of $55 per month. So when you compare Dish Network vs Direct TV pricing, Dish Network always come out on top. When you compare Dish Network vs Direct TV, you'll find that Dish Network customers are special and receive special treatment from Dish Network for being loyal Dish Network Customers.
Do you know who the CEO is of Direct TV? I doubt it. But if you ask a Dish Network Customer who the CEO of Dish Network is, most will probably tell you that it's Charlie Ergen. Do you know how Dish Network customers know who he is? It's simple, each month Charlie hosts a show on channel 100 called Charlie Chat. This show is all about finding out what Dish Network customers want. Charlie reaches out each month to ask millions of Dish Network customers to call in and tell him what they like and what they don't like. I don't know of any other company in the world where the CEO takes questions directly from it's customers each and every month. This just one of the hidden features of being a Dish Network Customer and you won't know this until you become a Dish Network customer.
Let's compare Dish Network vs Direc Tv on another note, a while back, Viacom's contract ran out with Dish Network meaning that Dish Network had to renegotiate the programming contract. Viacom affected about 7 Dish Network channels. Viacom wanted to increase the rates and Dish Network would have had to increase the rates of all Dish Network Customers. Charlie said no to Viacom and demanded the the same contract rates as before. It was a standstill for two months and the contract expired and Dish Network pulled all of Viacom's programming from it's lineup. What happened was that 12 million Dish Network Customers were no longer seeing commercials from Viacom programming and Viacom's advertisers put a little pressure on Viacom to make a deal with Dish Network. The Viacom programming blackout lasted about 24 hours and the final result was that Dish Network won the same rates they had before and Dish Network Customers monthly rates did not go up. How many CEOs will stand up to these large companies like that? I'll tell you; none. You don't see Cable TVdoing that, they only raise rates, we all know that. And Direct Tv, well, they don't do it either. This is just another one of those little hidden benefits that you'll only realize by being a Dish Network customer. Also, Charlie apologized to all Dish Network customers for the 24 hour blackout of only Viacom channels and credited all Dish Network Customers $1 on their bill and gave them 3 free Pay Per View movie coupons. You may think $1 is not much, but multiply it by 12,000,000 customers. It just goes to show you that Dish Network is a company that truly cares about it's customers and is not afraid to show it. |
